Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2025: Significance

Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls during the Dhanur solar month in the Hindu calendar. Known as Dhanurmasa or Margazhi month in Tamil traditions, this Shukla Paksha Ekadashi (waxing phase of the moon) differs from the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi (waning phase). Vaikuntha Ekadashi’s observance is based on the solar calendar, meaning it may occur in either the Margashirsha or Pausha month of the Hindu lunar calendar.

In the Gregorian calendar, there may be none, one, or two Vaikuntha Ekadashis in a year, depending on astronomical calculations.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2025: Spiritual Importance

Also referred to as Mukkoti Ekadashi, this day is regarded as the opening of the Vaikuntha Dwaram, or the gate to Lord Vishnu’s inner sanctum. It is believed that those who observe a fast and perform rituals on this day attain salvation and gain entry into Vaikuntha.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi is particularly significant in two famous temples in India:

  1. Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh
  2. Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu
  3. In Kerala, it is known as Swarga Vathil Ekadashi, which translates to the "Gateway to Heaven."
Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2025: Rituals and Fasting Rules

Observing a fast (Vrat) on Vaikuntha Ekadashi is central to the celebrations. The fast is concluded the next day by performing Parana (breaking the fast) at an appropriate time. Below are key guidelines for observing the fast:

  • Parana Timing: Parana is performed after sunrise on Dwadashi Tithi, the day following Ekadashi. It must be completed within Dwadashi, as failing to do so is considered an offence.
  • Avoid Hari Vasara: Parana should not be performed during Hari Vasara, the first one-fourth duration of Dwadashi. Devotees are advised to wait for Hari Vasara to end.
  • Best Time to Break the Fast: The ideal time is during Pratahkal (morning). If that is not possible, the fast can be broken after Madhyahna (afternoon). Observing Ekadashi Fasting

In some cases, Ekadashi fasting is observed on two consecutive days. The choice of which day to fast depends on individual practices and beliefs:
  • Householders (Smarthas): Those with families are advised to observe the fast on the first day.
  • Sanyasis and Widows: The second day is recommended for renunciates and those seeking Moksha (liberation).
  • Staunch Devotees: Those deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu often fast on both days to seek his blessings.
