Navratri, the nine-day festival dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga, holds immense significance in Hindu culture. One of the most sacred and revered texts recited during this period is the Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path. This text, which is part of the Markandeya Purana, celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura, symbolising the triumph of good over evil.

The Durga Saptashati is composed of 700 verses, arranged into 13 chapters, and narrates the fierce battle between Goddess Durga and the powerful asura (demon) Mahishasura. The text not only glorifies the might of the Goddess but also conveys spiritual teachings that highlight the values of courage, strength, and devotion. It is traditionally chanted during Navratri to invoke the blessings of the Goddess and to purify the mind, body, and soul.

Durga Saptashati: Origin and Significance

The Durga Saptashati is a prominent section of the Markandeya Purana, written by the sage Markandeya. It depicts the various forms and exploits of Goddess Durga as she fights demons who threaten the peace and harmony of the universe. Among these demons, Mahishasura, the buffalo demon, stands out as a symbol of ignorance and arrogance. The Goddess’s battle against Mahishasura is depicted with vivid detail, showcasing her power and divinity.

The text is also known as Chandi Path, where the term "Chandi" refers to the fierce aspect of the Goddess Durga, and "Path" signifies the recitation of her deeds. Reciting the Durga Saptashati is believed to remove obstacles, protect against negative energies, and grant success and prosperity. The ritualistic reading of the Durga Saptashati is an integral part of Navratri celebrations, where devotees chant the verses with devotion and dedication.

Durga Saptashati: Importance of Durga Saptashati

During Navratri, a ritualistic reading of the Durga Saptashati is performed in honour of Goddess Durga. The text contains “Saptashata” or 700 verses, hence the name Durga Saptashati. For ritualistic purposes, several subsidiary texts are also read before and after the 700 verses to complete the chanting. The chanting is often accompanied by a Chandi Homa, a sacred fire ritual in which offerings are made to the Goddess while chanting the verses from the Durga Saptashati. A total of 700 Ahuti (offerings) are made during the Chandi Homa, representing each of the 700 verses of the text.

The Chandi Homa is considered one of the most powerful Homas performed for health, prosperity, and to overcome enemies. It is said that the vibrations generated by chanting the Durga Saptashati purify the environment and energise the space with divine energies.
