Karwa Chauth 2025: One of the most significant festivals for married Hindu women, will be observed on Friday, October 10, 2025. This auspicious vrat (fast) is dedicated to praying for the long life, health, and prosperity of one’s husband. Falling on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Kartik month, Karwa Chauth is celebrated with devotion, fasting, and beautiful rituals across North India.

Women begin the day with Sargi, a pre-dawn meal given by mothers-in-law, and end their fast only after sighting the moon and performing Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi. The festival not only strengthens marital bonds but also reflects faith, endurance, and devotion.

Significance of Karwa Chauth

The term Karwa Chauth, also known as Karak Chaturthi, is derived from Karwa (a small earthen pot) used during the puja to offer water (Arghya) to the moon. This festival holds deep emotional and spiritual meaning for married women, symbolizing love, dedication, and sacrifice.

Traditionally, women observe a nirjala fast—without food or water—from sunrise to moonrise, seeking blessings for their husband’s long life. The festival also coincides with Sankashti Chaturthi, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. During the puja, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya are worshipped.

Karwa Chauth 2025: Vrat Vidhi and Puja Rituals

1. Morning Rituals and Sankalp

Women start the day early with Sargi, consisting of fruits, dry fruits, sweets, and traditional dishes. After a holy bath, they take a Sankalp (pledge) to observe the fast for the wellbeing and prosperity of their husband and family.

Sankalp Mantra:

“मम सुखसौभाग्य पुत्रपौत्रादि सुस्थिर श्री प्राप्तये करक चतुर्थी व्रतमहं करिष्ये।”

(Translation: I will observe Karak Chaturthi Vrat for the wellbeing of my husband, sons, and grandsons, and for enduring prosperity.)

2. Karwa Chauth Puja Vidhi

The Karwa Chauth Puja is performed during Sandhya Kaal (evening time) after sunset. Women draw or install an image of Goddess Gaura (Parvati) or Chauth Mata and offer prayers. The puja begins by worshipping Goddess Parvati, followed by Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya.

Puja Mantra:

“नमः शिवायै शर्वाण्यै सौभाग्यं संतति शुभाम्। प्रयच्छ भक्तियुक्तानां नारीणां हरवल्लभे॥”

(Translation: O consort of Lord Shiva, bless your devotees with a long life for their husbands and prosperous sons.)

During the puja, women narrate the Karwa Chauth Katha, the story of Queen Veeravati and her seven brothers, which symbolizes devotion and faith.

3. Offering and Charity (Karwa Daan)

After the puja, women fill a Karwa (pitcher) with milk or water, drop coins or precious stones inside, and offer it to a Brahmin or a Suhagan (married woman) while chanting:

“करकं क्षीरसम्पूर्णं तोयपूर्णमथापि वा। ददामि रत्नसंयुक्तं चिरंजीवतु मे पतिः॥”

(Translation: I donate this Karwa filled with milk and gems for the long life of my husband.)

Moonrise Puja and Breaking the Fast

After completing the puja, women eagerly wait for moonrise (Chandrodaya). Once the moon is visible, they offer Arghya (water) to the moon through the Karwa, view their husband’s face through a sieve, and receive water and the first morsel of food from him to break the fast. This ritual signifies eternal love and trust between husband and wife.

Karwa Chauth 2025: Sargi Tips

  • Include dry fruits, coconut, sweets, and fruits for sustained energy.
  • Avoid oily or spicy food to prevent discomfort during fasting.
  • Drink plenty of water before sunrise.
  • Add fenia (vermicelli) and mathri, traditional Karwa Chauth treats, to the Sargi thali.
