Goga Navami is an important festival celebrated in several regions of India, particularly in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. This festival is dedicated to Gogaji, also known as Goga Dev or Jahar Veer Gogga, a revered folk deity who is believed to protect people from snake bites and other venomous creatures.

Goga Navami 2024 Date and Tithi Time
In 2024, Goga Navami will be observed on Tuesday, August 27. The Navami tithi begins at 2:20 AM on August 27 and will end at 1:33 AM on August 28.

Significance of Goga Navami
Goga Navami falls on the ninth day (Navami) of the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, typically in August or September. Gogaji is worshipped by people from various communities, especially farmers, who seek his blessings to protect their crops and cattle from harm.

Gogaji is widely believed to have the power to heal snake bites and other venom-related illnesses. He is also seen as a symbol of unity and communal harmony, revered by both Hindus and Muslims. Stories about Gogaji often highlight his bravery, devotion, and miraculous abilities, making him a beloved figure in the regions where he is worshipped.

Legends of Gogaji
According to popular legends, Gogaji was born to Queen Bachal and King Zewar of the Rajput Chauhan dynasty. His birth was attributed to the blessings of Guru Gorakhnath, a highly respected yogi. Gogaji is typically depicted riding a horse, holding a spear, and accompanied by a snake, symbolising his power over serpents.

Many stories recount Gogaji’s life as a protector and his miraculous deeds. Following his death, his legend grew, and he became worshipped as a deity who provides protection from snake bites and other dangers.

Goga Navami Rituals
On Goga Navami, devotees visit Goga Mari, the shrines dedicated to Gogaji, which are scattered across the regions where he is venerated. These shrines often feature symbols of Gogaji’s horse and snake. Devotees bring offerings such as sweets, coconuts, and other items as part of their worship.

Goga Navami holds significant cultural value, especially in rural areas, where Gogaji is seen as a guardian against both natural and supernatural threats. The festival underscores the belief in folk deities and their importance in daily life. Spiritually, Goga Navami is a time for devotees to seek protection from snakes and other dangers, ensuring the safety of their families and livestock.
