History of Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi
Prophet Muhammad is believed to have been born around 570 AD in Mecca, on the 12th day of Rabi' al-awwal, according to Sunni scholars. However, Shia scholars place his birth on the 17th day of the month. The day is observed with both celebrations of his birth and mourning of his passing, which occurred in 632 AD. The first recorded grand observance of Eid-e-Milad took place nearly 600 years after the Prophet’s death, mainly in Egypt during the Fatimid dynasty. Some suggest the tradition may have originated in Syria or Iraq as well.
Significance of Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi
The observance of Eid-e-Milad is a time for reflection, prayers, and gathering with family and friends. Muslims across the world come together to offer gratitude, engage in prayers, and exchange greetings. On this day, some people wear new clothes, prepare feasts, and visit shrines, mosques, or dargahs. However, certain Islamic traditions, such as Wahhabism, Deobandism, and Ahl-i Hadith, regard Eid-e-Milad as a religious innovation, or bid'ah, which is not found in early Islamic teachings. As a result, countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar do not observe the day.
