The music composer and singer AR Rahman expressed his support for U.S. Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris by recording a 30-minute performance video dedicated to her campaign during a concert.
The Asian-American and Pacific Islander Victory Fund Committee has enlisted Oscar-winning musician to support Kamala Harris in her presidential campaign.
The full event aired on October 13 at 8 p.m. ET (October 14, 5:30 a.m. IST) on the AAPI Victory Fund's YouTube channel and was also broadcast across major South Asian media networks. The AAPI Victory Fund shared a teaser featuring Rahman alongside Indiaspora Founder MR Rangaswami as they prepared for the performance.
During the event, Rahman showcased some of his most iconic compositions, including "Jai Ho" and "Singapenne," while the performance included messages emphasizing Kamala Harris's historic candidacy and her dedication to the AAPI community.
Rahman has made history as the first international artist from South Asia and India to back a U.S. presidential campaign. The AAPI Victory Fund is a political action committee dedicated to mobilizing eligible Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voters while supporting Democratic AAPI candidates.
Speaking about Kamala Harris' candidature, Rahman said, "Her (Kamala Harris's) interest in focusing on what unites us instead of what divides us is a message that is very important, not just for the United States but for the world. As a fellow South Asian, Tamil, person, I’m deeply proud of her commitment to making the world a better place."
Rahman's performance and endorsement of Kamala Harris are anticipated to rally support from the Asian community in the U.S. The elections are set for November 5, where Democrat Kamala Harris will face off against Republican Donald Trump.
