Republican Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance, already criticised for his 'childless cat ladies' remark, is facing renewed backlash following the resurfacing of a 2021 video. In the video, Vance controversially proposed that parents should have greater voting rights than those without children.
Vance made this suggestion during a speech to the 'Intercollegiate Studies Institute,' arguing that people without children have no "investment" in the future of America. He also remarked that those without children "maybe shouldn't get nearly the same voice."
Vance, the running mate of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, has faced widespread public condemnation for his 'childless cat ladies' remark. In his 2021 Fox News interview, he targeted Kamala Harris, now the Democratic Presidential nominee, along with other Democratic leaders, claiming that those without offspring, especially "childless cat ladies," had no "direct stake" in the country.
Vance told Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson that the United States was being run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”
Kamala Harris has two stepchildren, Cole and Ella, from her husband Doug Emhoff's previous marriage to Kerstin Emhoff. While Harris's lack of biological children has faced criticism from Republicans, she has received support from politicians, celebrities, and her family.
Vance's comments have also drawn criticism from Jennifer Aniston. Despite her usual preference for privacy, Aniston condemned Vance's extreme views on reproductive rights, highlighting her public journey through infertility.
“All I can say is… Mr. Vance, I pray that your daughter is fortunate enough to bear children of her own one day,” Aniston wrote in her post. “I hope she will not need to turn to IVF as a second option. Because you are trying to take that away from her, too,” she added.
Reproductive health will be a major issue in November’s election, with many women in Hollywood voicing their support for reproductive rights and backing Harris, who has been the Biden administration’s foremost advocate for abortion and women’s health care.
