A US woman has filed a police complaint after her family home was mistakenly demolished while she was on vacation. Susan Hodgson was on holiday when she received a phone call from a neighbour informing her that her property in Atlanta was being bulldozed.
She recalled the neighbour asking her: “Did you hire somebody to tear your house down next door to me?”
“I said ‘no’ and she said, ‘Well, there’s someone over here who just demolished the whole house and tore it all down,’” Hodgson told the Associated Press.
When the neighbour confronted the worker demolishing the house, he reportedly got “nasty” and asked her to mind her own business. Hodgson then asked a family member to go over and look into the matter. That is when the person in charge of the site checked his permit and admitted he had gotten the wrong address.
When Hodgson returned to Atlanta, she found a pile of rubble where the family house used to stand. She is still in shock over the loss of the home. “It’s been boarded up about 15 years, and we keep it boarded, covered, grass cut, and the yard is clean,” she said. “The taxes are paid and everything is up on it.”
“I am furious,” she added. “I keep waking up thinking, ‘Is this all a joke or something?’ I’m just in shock.”
The person who demolished the house left everything at the site and took off. “It's just a grumbled mess. The whole house is tumbled in and a big ole mess. He didn't haul nothing off,” said Hodgson, who has since filed a police complaint and lawyered up.
The company responsible for the mistaken demolition, called You Call It, We Haul It, told Fox 5 Atlanta that the incident is 'under investigation' and that they are 'working to rectify the situation'.
