If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, you’ve probably read up on this beautiful country and found that it has notoriously unpredictable weather. You will probably get a tan, get stuck in snow, get drenched in the rain and experience a sandstorm in a fortnight. So how on earth do you pack for Iceland? Read on...1. Pack good outerwear: It’s all about the layers. So make sure you pack enough layers to stay warm and stylish and shed them when the sun comes out to play. A great tip is to pack a lot of thermal wear, so that it can go underneath, and you can wear whatever you like on top. It keeps you from looking bundled up. 2. Jackets: As mentioned earlier, the weather in Iceland can turn in seconds. Invest in a jacket that’s snow proof, waterproof, windproof and everything proof! Don’t forget your fingers and toes – good socks and gloves are a must.3. Waterproof trousers: Yes, they’re ugly, but nothing can be more uncomfortable than sitting in soggy pants throughout the day and risking the chance of getting ill. You can opt for lined trousers or a thin pair that can be worn over whatever you’re already wearing, so you can take them off if the sun decides to shine.4. Good boots: Travelling to Iceland inevitably means you will want to go out and do some hiking in the mountains. A good pair of walking shoes is a must-have, especially in summer. There are a lot of waterfalls and national parks to be explored on foot as well.
5. Sunglasses: Small, but very essential. You’ll need sunglasses to avoid the brightness caused by the sun shining off the snow. 6. GoPro: While you may feel you can make do with a DSLR or a phone Camera, keep in mind that these aren’t suitable for all weather conditions. A GoPro will come to your rescue and can be attached to your head, chest or wrist. You can also take it with you in the hot springs or around waterfalls. If you do plan to take a DSLR, carry an extra battery, as it can run out quicker in cold weather.7. Swimwear: Iceland has an abundance of hot springs and missing out on taking a dip in them would be a tragedy. Additionally, a number of hotels have hot tubs!
8. Sunscreen: While you can skip the sunscreen if you’re travelling to Iceland in winter, you will need a lot of this as the sun get’s strong in summer. 9. Shorts and Tees: During the summer in Iceland, the sun feels much warmer than it actually is, and more so in areas without a lot of wind. Since you would be doing a lot of hiking, you will need some shorts and tees. You can always get the hiking pants where you can simply remove or attach the bottom half of your pants with a zip.10. Smaller gadgets: Besides a sleeping bag and travel pillow, you will find a few small knick knacks convenient to take along with you to Iceland. Carry a thermos to store your food, as Iceland is a pretty expensive place to eat out all the time. Your water bottle is a must as well. Rather than carrying a normal tower, purchase a fast-drying one.Because of the humidity, towels stay wet for the entire day. Lastly, carry along a sleeping mask, as during summer, it is still bright at night.Pack wisely and remember – less is more!
