Karwa Chauth is a festival observed by married Hindu women, especially in the northern and western parts of India. Karwa Chauth is celebrated on the fourth day after the full moon in the Hindu lunar month of Kartik. On this day, married women observe a fast from sunrise until moonrise for the long life, health and prosperity of their husbands. During this ‘nirjala vrat’, women consume neither food nor water. In the night, they break their fast by looking at the moon.
For this reason, the moonrise timings become especially important on the day of Karwa Chauth. This year, Karwa Chauth (also spelled Karva Chauth), is falling on November 1. On this day, married Hindu women typically observe a fast, put mehendi on their hands and dress up for the occasion. They break their fast after looking at the moon and offering arghya.
