Independence Day: 'National flag cannot be used as part of clothing,' Centre on dos and don'ts

According to the Flag Code, the National Flag of India shall be made of handspun and handwoven wool/cotton/silk khaadi bunting only. Also, it cannot be displayed with the saffron band at the bottom, even if done unintentionally.

Ahead of Independence Day on August 15, the Ministry of Culture issued a reminder on the dos and don'ts of using the tricolour. In a post on Instagram, the ministry stated, "The National Flag cannot be used as part of clothing such as a costume, uniform, napkins, etc... Respect for the #NationalFlag is a reflection of our national pride."

As per the code, here are some of the dos and don'ts of using the tricolour on Independence Day:

  • The National Flag of India shall be made of handspun and handwoven wool/cotton/silk khaadi bunting. It shall be rectangular in shape. The ratio of the length to the height of the flag should be 3:2.
  • The flag shall not be used as a drapery in any form whatsoever, including private funerals.
  • It shall not be used as portion of costume or uniform of any description nor shall it be printed on cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins or any dress material.
  • Lettering of any kind shall not be put upon the flag.
  • It shall not be used to cover a speaker's desk or platform.
  • It shall not be allowed to touch the ground or the floor or trail in water.
  • The national flag shall not be draped over any vehicle.
  • It shall not be used to cover any building.
  • The flag cannot be displayed with the saffron band at the bottom, even if done unintentionally.
