The scammer told Kaveri that her daughter was arrested with three others while attempting to film an MLA’s son in a compromising position.

Scams have plagued the society nowadays and several people are falling victim to a variety of them. Whether it is a link or a fraudster asking for an OTP, there have been instances of people losing huge amounts of money. So, when a woman shared her scary experience after receiving a hoax call from a “cop”, the post obviously went viral and garnered a lot of attention.

X user Kaveri shared a thread in which she narrated how a fake police officer tried to scam her using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The fraudster used AI to replicate her daughter’s voice and made it sound like she was in trouble. The scammer told Kaveri that her daughter was arrested with three others while attempting to film an MLA’s son in a compromising position and then blackmailing him.

“I got a call about an hour ago from an unknown number. I unusually do not respond to unknown numbers but I don't know what made me answer this call. On the other end was a guy who said he is a cop and asked me if I knew where my daughter K is. He said K gave him my number. ‘Aap ki beti ko arrest kar liya gaya hai’. I felt actually relieved at that point because initially I felt she could have been in an accident or hurt,” she wrote.

When Kaveri demanded to talk to her daughter, the scammer to her horror played a recording that sounded just like her voice. “'Mumma mujhe bacha lo, mumma mujhe bacha lo.’ The voice sounded exactly like my daughters but that's not the way she would have spoken.”

Kaveri soon realised its a scam and demanded to speak to her daughter properly. "I asked him to let me speak do my daughter properly. He got all angry and rude. We are taking her away then, he said. Ok, take her away then, I told him. And I laughed. He cut the call," she wrote further.

Since being shared, the post has clocked in over six lakh views and several concerned comments from social media users. Some people even shared their own scary experiences.

"This is horrendous. Where are we going?" one user wrote. Another user commented, "Uff this is very scary. I'm assuming they also know when your daughter is not actually with you. How scary is that! They know your number, your name, your daughter's name, and some possible info about her whereabouts."

"Similar thing happened with my mum. Though my brother lives out of the country, the tone in which the self proclaimed ASI threatened my mother about his whereabouts, she was really scared. It was a WhatsApp call and the DP had a man wearing police uniform," a third user remarked.
