A young man from Rajasthan has been detained for allegedly posing as IAS officer Tina Dabi and asking for Amazon gift cards from unsuspecting people on WhatsApp. The incident was reported after Rajasthan Administrative Service officer Sunita Choudhary received a message on WhatsApp from the accused asking for a gift card with the claim that he was Dabi.
The WhatsApp display picture was also Dabi’s – the phone number was different.
Suspecting something was amiss, Choudhary called up Dabi, who is the Jaisalmer district collector, to confirm whether it was actually her.
Shocked to hear about the impostor, Dabi informed the police, India Today reported.
The cybercell of Jaisalmer police tracked down the youth from Dungarpur and he is currently being questioned.
The youth has already duped several people by posing as Dabi. Unsuspecting victims, misled by the accused’s impeccable English and Dabi’s name and picture, gave in to the demands.
Dabi has reportedly asked people to be cautious of such fraud attempts and confirmed that she has only one official phone number.
Tina Dabi, who topped the civil service exams in 2015, an alumni of Delhi's Lady Shri Ram College, was in the limelight after becoming the first Dalit to top the civil services exam, that too in her first attempt.
Dabi’s younger sister Ria secured the 15th rank at the UPSC examination last year.
