India's efforts towards achieving sustainable development goal targets have shown initial results, as the country's installed renewable energy capacity has crossed the milestone of 100 gigawatts (GW), as per a statement issued by the central government on August 12.

"The total installed renewable energy capacity in India, excluding large hydro, has crossed the milestone of 100 GW. Today, India stands at fourth position in the world in terms of installed RE capacity, fifth in solar and fourth in wind in terms of installed capacity," the Union Ministry of Power said.

The achievement assumes significance as India has set an ambitious target of expanding its installed RE capacity to 450 GW by 2030.

"While 100 GW has been installed, 50 GW is under installation and 27 GW is under tendering. India has also enhanced its ambition to install 450 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. If large hydro is included the installed RE capacity increases to 146 GW," the ministry staid.

Power Minister RK Singh, while crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "visionary leadership" behind India surpassing the milestone of 100 GW of installed RE capacity, said the country "shall continue to be global leader in energy transition".

The development comes at a time when the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned in its report that climate change would trigger extreme weather events in India and rest of South Asia, which may severely hit lives, livelihoods and businesses.

Notably, India, as part of the multilateral Paris Agreement to combat climate change, has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emission intensity of its GDP by 33-35 percent below 2005 levels by 2030, and also switch to non-fossil fuel sources for 40 percent of its total power capacity by 2030.
