A traveling supervisor for a cable and construction contractor in the US has revealed the aftermath of submitting a two-week notice: the company refused to cover their flight back home from a remote assignment.
The employee, who shared their experience on Reddit, described dedicating three years to the company, rising from a technician to a supervisor. Initially employed by a smaller, employee-focused firm, their workplace was later acquired by a corporate giant that laid off half the workforce and slashed support for remaining employees.
Despite adhering to professional norms by providing notice of resignation, the employee claims they were informed the company would not pay for their return trip. This decision left them stranded and furious. “I thought giving my two weeks would make a nice bridge in case they ever changed policies,” the employee wrote. “But after this, I hope the company goes belly up.”
Many users commented saying the employee should not have quit while he was on the road. To this, the poster revealed that they are travelling for the job almost all the time and would get sent home every four months “for a short stay of remote work from home.”
“They also do not pay for travel home for vacation,” he added in an edit to the post.

Another commenter drew parallels to oil patch layoffs, describing the act of abandoning an employee far from home as inhumane. The employee has since revealed plans to seek legal counsel while considering using accrued sick leave to avoid working the remainder of the notice period.
