Asus ROG Phone 3 features a hidden 160Hz refresh rate mode

But enable it at your own risk

July 28, 2020 / 20:04 IST

Last week, Asus unveiled its next-gen gaming smartphone to the world. The Asus ROG Phone 3 First Impressions: The mobile gaming monster returns with a vengeance ROG Phone 3 is a beast of a smartphone with an industry-leading spec sheet, including a top-notch display. The ROG Phone 3 joins the likes of the Nubia Red Magic 5G and Lenovo Legion Phone Duel with its 144Hz refresh rate, which is the highest on a smartphone.

However, it turns out that the display can refresh even faster, up to 160Hz to be precise. XDA-Developers discovered that the ROG Phone 3 has a hidden option to enable the phone to refresh at 160 hertz. XDA-Developers found an Android Debug Bridge (ABD) command that enables the screen to run at an experimental 160Hz.

Activating the 160Hz refresh rate on your ROG Phone 3 will require a basic ABD knowledge. You can head to the link here to enable the 160Hz refresh rate on the ROG Phone 3. The report also confirms that the panel indeed runs on 160Hz after it is enabled.

It is worth noting that this is still experimental, and the ROG Phone 3 may not be fully optimized to run on the 160Hz refresh rate. So, if you plan on tinkering with it, we suggested that you proceed with caution and at your own risk.

Enabling the high refresh rate could also have a major impact on battery life as higher refresh rate screens are known to consume more battery. Additionally, it is hard enough to find games that support 144 frames per second, little alone 160Hz.
