Wicked: For Good review

‘Wicked: For Good,’ directed by Jon M. Chu, was released in theatres on 21st November and stars Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Marissa Bode.

Continuing the story of friendship

The first 'Wicked' movie introduced Elphaba and Glinda, two very different girls whose friendship grew despite misunderstandings and challenges. Elphaba became the “Wicked Witch,” and Glinda rose to prominence in Emerald City.

Their bond, tested by their choices and circumstances, was central to the story. ‘Wicked: For Good’ picks up after these events, exploring how their relationship and the people around them are affected by past decisions.

This sequel follows their growth and new challenges, though at times it struggles to match the first film’s energy and clarity. It sets the stage for a story that examines both personal choices and their wider consequences in Oz and makes for an engaging viewing.

Plot and challenges in Oz

In this sequel, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) lives in the forest, secretly opposing the injustices in Oz, while Glinda (Ariana Grande) enjoys authority in Emerald City and prepares for a politically significant wedding.

The city’s peace is fragile, and the wizard’s manipulations threaten to widen the gap between the two friends. When a mysterious threat emerges—rumors of rebellion and sabotage—both witches are forced back into action.

The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) manipulates events from behind the scenes, while Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) offers guidance and strategic insight. The story hovers between political conflicts, personal struggles, and moments of reconciliation, building to a confrontation that could reshape their friendship and the future of Oz. Some sequences, however, feel rushed or confusing, especially for viewers not familiar with the first film.

Despite these issues, the story provides several thoughtful moments that highlight the stakes for both the characters and their world.

Visuals and storytelling

The film presents a detailed, immersive version of Oz, with elaborate sets and costumes. Certain scenes, however, are overlong or visually crowded, sometimes making it harder to follow the story. Compared to the first film, this one focuses more on character decisions than large musical numbers, which helps with depth but slows the pace in places.

The plot examines the consequences of choices and the distribution of power in Oz. Not every song is memorable, and a few sequences feel stretched, but the storytelling allows viewers to track the characters’ development.

‘No Place Home,’ sung by Cynthia Erivo, highlights Elphaba’s sense of isolation, while Ariana Grande’s ‘The Girl in the Bubble’ captures Glinda’s mix of curiosity and determination. Overall, the film has moments that impress visually and emotionally, even if the pacing occasionally falters.

Performances that stand out

The actors bring credibility to the story. Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba demonstrates determination and doubt in equal measure, making her believable. Ariana Grande’s Glinda reflects a mix of confidence and uncertainty, showing how she has matured.

Jeff Goldblum’s Wizard provides humour and tension, while Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero contributes steady emotional support. Even smaller roles, such as Madame Morrible and the city’s residents, feel grounded.

At the same time, some characters could have been better developed, and a few lines of dialogue come across as predictable. The cast’s strong performances help keep viewers engaged, even when the narrative slows.

Wrapping up the tale

‘Wicked: For Good’ concludes the story with enough clarity to satisfy viewers, even if it does not match the first film’s pace or energy. Some musical moments lack impact, and certain scenes feel drawn out, but the story’s focus on decision-making and relationships keeps it engaging.

The film depicts how choices affect both individuals and the wider community of Oz. By the end, viewers are left with a sense of resolution while also being prompted to reflect on the growth of the characters and the consequences of their actions.

The ending ties the main arcs together and leaves room for reflection on the characters’ growth and the world around them.
