An annual financial benefit of Rs 6,000 is provided to eligible beneficiary farmer families, payable in three equal four-monthly instalments of Rs 2,000 each, under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM Kisan) scheme. Announced in the Union Budget on February 1, 2019, the scheme provides a direct annual income support of Rs 6,000 per annum to farmers with land holding below two hectares. It was estimated to benefit around 12 crore farmers and would cost the exchequer Rs 75,000 crore. The fund is transferred directly to the bank accounts of the beneficiaries. The first instalment was for December 2018-March 2019 period. It was formally launched at the national level by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 24 at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh by transferring the first instalment to 1.01 crore farmers, amounting Rs 2,021 crore. In May 2020, the Centre said it transferred over Rs 19,000 crore to bank accounts of 9.65 crore farmers under the PM-KISAN scheme during the lockdown period. Most recently, PM Modi released the next instalment of the scheme in August 2021. The PMO said this enabled the transfer of over Rs 19,500 crore to more than 9.75 crore beneficiary farmer families.
