The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is currently the largest and most popular political party in India, after the Indian National Congress. It has been the ruling political party of Asia's third largest economy since 2014. The right-wing party shares ideological and organizational links with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The party's origin lies in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, formed in 1951 by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. In 1977, after the State of Emergency, the Jana Sangh merged with several other parties to form the Janata Party. The merged entity defeated the incumbent Congress party in the 1977 general election. After the 1998 general election, the BJP-led coalition known as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) under the leadership of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee formed a government that lasted for a year. After fresh elections, the NDA government, again headed by Vajpayee, lasted for a full term in office. However, in the 2004 general election, the NDA was defeated and remained the principal opposition party for the next 10 years. In 2014, PM Narendra Modi led the party to a landslide victory. In 2019 Lok Sabha polls, NDA scored an even bigger victory by securing 353 seats out of 543. In 2014 the PM Modi-led coalition secured 282 seats. More
