After the concept reveal, teasers and spy shots the Tata Safari is finally here in its all-new avatar. The Safari badge has always been held in high regard in the four-wheeler community and the new Tata Safari did not fail to deliver. In fact, the new update promises to take things even further. Complete with an entire overhaul of both the exteriors and interiors, the only new thing lacking in the Tata Safari is a new powertrain. Bookings for the SUV have begun with the token amount of Rs 25,000. (Image: Tata Motors)

The exterior | It would be remiss to say which of the updates is more comprehensive seeing as how Tata has decided to give something akin to an all-new car. On the exterior, you will find that the design closely matches the styling philosophy of the new Tata Nexon. Slim LED DRLs sit right at the top connected by a full-width LED light bar. Just below is a new, broader grille that integrates well into the LED DRL lines. Lower still is a large central air intake with its own unique inserts. The highlights, however, are the main headlamp clusters. Sat in a rectangular C-shaped housing, the units have been pushed right to the edges of the Safari giving it the illusion of a wider stance. In profile, little has been changed but a new set of 19-inch alloy rims are unique to the Tata Safari. Over on the back, the design takes an almost boxy approach. Changes include the new tail lamp design as well as the connected LED light bar. The bumper has been refreshed as well with two protrusions that stick out on either side. Seven exterior paint options are on offer, namely, Galactic Sapphire, Lunar Slate, Oberon Black, Cosmic Gold, Supernova Copper, Stardust Ash and Stellar Frost. In terms of dimensions, the Tata Safari measures 4,668 mm in length, 1,922 mm in width and 1,795 mm in height. The wheelbase measures 2,741 mm. (Image: Tata Motors)

The interior | Over on the inside, the dashboard has been heavily tweaked. There is a new free-standing infotainment centre that is now a 12.3-inch Harman touchscreen system. Just below that sits the new touch-based HVAC control panel. The new 10.25-inch driver’s display is customisable and gets integrated navigation. This sits behind the new 4-spoke steering wheel that features the backlit Tata logo on the centre. The centre console has also been revised. There is a new stubbier gear selector lever for the automatic variants and a new rotary dial for the drive mode options. (Image: Tata Motors)

There is a laundry list of new features as well. Of course, the infotainment system comes with wireless Apple AirPlay and Android Auto integrated, but providing audio is a 10-speaker setup by JBL with Harman Advanced Audioworx and there are multiple voice assistants to do your bidding. Then you have the voice-assisted panoramic sunroof, ventilated front and second-row seats, gesture-controlled powered tailgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, 6-way powered driver’s seat with memory function, 4-way powered co-driver seat with electric boss mode, comfort headrest in the second-row seats and rear sun-shades as well as third-row AC vents. Wireless charging and a 45-watt USB C charger are located in the front console, which also includes a cooled front armrest storage area. And, of course, Tata’s IRA 2.0 connected car tech to control various functions of your car using your smartphone. (Image: Tata Motors)

The performance | Powering the Tata Safari is the same old Kryotec 2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. This powertrain delivers 170 hp of maximum power and 350 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include both a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The rotary dial we mentioned in the interiors section controls the terrain response system which includes Normal, Rough and Wet and buttons on the side control the drive modes, Eco, City and Sports. For safety, the Tata Safari gets six airbags as standard across the range with an additional seventh airbag in the higher trim levels. There is an emergency call/breakdown call button for when you’re in trouble and a 360-degree surround view system for when you're navigating tight spaces. The Safari also comes with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). This allows for autonomous features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, rear collision warning, traffic sign recognition, high-beam assist, lane departure warning and blind spot detection among others. Tata Motors has ditched the old trim nomenclature and with the launch of the Nexon, adopted a new naming scheme called personas. The Tata Safari gets four overall personas - Smart, Pure, Adventure and Accomplished. The Adventure and Accomplished personas, however, have their own sub-personas called Adventure+ and Accomplished+ making a total of six unique personas. In general, the Tata Safari is available in a seven-seater configuration, however, a six-seater config can be opted for but only in the Accomplished+ trim level. (Image: Tata Motors)

Now, price announcements haven’t been made yet, but the complete launch should be just around the corner. Rivals for the Tata Safari continue to be the MG Hector Plus, the Mahindra Scorpio N and the Hyundai Alcazar. (Image: Tata Motors)
