In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad on Wednesday night, a 4-year-old girl made a video call to her grandmother to show her mother’s lifeless body hanging in their home in Buddhi Vihar Colony and said, “Papa hung mom. She is not responding.”
The girl pointed the phone towards the heart-breaking scene. Shocked by the call, the grandmother immediately alerted the police and other family members.
According to a Times of India report, the girl's father, Rohit Kumar, a software engineer from Modinagar, Ghaziabad, was taken into custody before dawn on Thursday.
The victim, Ruby Rani, 35, was a primary school teacher in Bikampur Kulwada, Kundarki Block, Moradabad. Originally from Jalalpur, Muradnagar, Ghaziabad, she married Kumar in 2019. They had been living with their daughter in a rented house in Moradabad.
"Rohit has been taken into custody for questioning. A case is being registered, and the investigation will continue based on the post-mortem report," said SP (City) Ranvijay Singh.
He examined the scene along with forensic experts.
The victim’s family claimed it was not suicide but murder, staged to appear as one, alleging that Kumar had been pressuring Rani for money, leading to frequent disputes.
On the day of the incident, Kumar allegedly transferred Rs 50,000 from Rani's account to his own. The couple also owned a house in Modinagar, for which she was paying the installments as he had stopped contributing. Kumar wanted to sell the house, but Rani refused.
He tortured his wife mentally and physically, as alleged by the victim’s family. They also informed the police about the video call made by their granddaughter.
While the family insists it was murder, the police are also looking into the possibility of suicide. Rani had called Kumar before the incident, threatening to take her life, said the police. Kumar's phone, laptop, and other electronic devices have been seized.
