A violent mob attacked the Udayagiri police station in Mysuru on the night of February 11, Tuesday, injuring seven policemen after a derogatory post on social media, officials said.
According to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Hitendra, the man responsible for the post was arrested, but tensions escalated when a crowd gathered outside the police station because of the rumour that he might be released soon. The mob attempted to storm the police station, vandalizing vehicles and attacking the cops.
“The situation has calmed down now,” he said, adding that a police team has been formed to identify and arrest those responsible for inciting the violence.
According to an ANI report, Congress MLA from Narasimharaja, Tanveer Sait, said that the chaos erupted after a Facebook post went viral. The crowd threw stones, vandalized vehicles, and attacked the police station. In an attempt to control the situation, the police were forced to resort to lathi charges to disperse the mob.
“The delay in action after lodging the complaint led to further tension. There was a gap of 5 to 6 hours while authorities verified the authenticity of the post,” Sait stated.
“During this period, the protesters grew agitated, blocked roads, and refused to calm down even after the accused was identified. This led to a lathi charge, stone-pelting, and attacks on the police station and vehicles.”
While the situation is under control now, additional police forces have been deployed in the area.
