As protests by doctors erupt nationwide over the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, disturbing details from the victim’s post-mortem reports have emerged. The autopsy reveals that the accused, civic volunteer Sanjoy Roy, violently assaulted the victim when she attempted to resist. The postgraduate trainee doctor endured such severe injuries that shards of glass from her broken spectacles penetrated her eyes, leading to extensive bleeding.
The post-mortem report also mentions cut marks on the victim’s hands and face, with injuries resulting from being slammed against a wall. The accused reportedly covered her mouth to muffle her cries, which resulted in additional injury marks. The assault led to her strangulation, with further evidence of rape indicated by injuries to her private parts.
According to a News18 Bangla report, Roy was intoxicated at the time of the attack. Additionally, cut marks on Roy’s hands and face suggest that the victim struggled to defend herself.
As per reports from Bengali daily Anandabazaar Patrika, the victim had watched Neeraj Chopra’s javelin throw during the Paris Olympics and had dinner at 2:30 am with four colleagues before heading to the seminar hall to rest. Statements from seven junior doctors, including those who dined with her, have been recorded.
The victim also reportedly spoke with her mother at 11 pm, mentioning that she had ordered food online. After dinner, she went to the seminar hall, wrapped a red blanket around herself, and slept on the blue carpet, where she was later attacked by Roy.
The Assistant Superintendent who first informed the victim's family, along with the head of the Chest Department, have been summoned for questioning.
The body of the postgraduate trainee was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the morning of August 9. Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police who had access to all departments at the hospital due to his position, was arrested on August 10 after CCTV footage revealed him entering the building where the victim was discovered.
The brutal murder has sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests by doctors and nurses in Kolkata and across India. In response to the growing unrest, Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, has resigned.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has, meanwhile, issued a stern ultimatum to the Kolkata police, warning that the investigation will be transferred to the CBI if the case is not resolved by Sunday.
