Kolkata trainee doctor's rape and murder accused Sanjay Roy showed no remorse when the police caught him and casually said, "Hang me if you want". When police began questioning him, he looked calm and relaxed and admitted to committing the crime. The investigation also revealed that his mobile phone had many pornographic clips.

Roy allegedly raped and murdered the 31-year-old doctor at city's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The semi-naked body of the woman was found in the seminar hall of the hospital on Thursday night. Though he was not a hospital employee he used to frequently visit buildings on the campus.

Hospital staff said that despite not being a cop, Roy roamed around in a T-shirt with KP (Kolkata Police) written on it. His bike too had a KP tag. Hed had joined Kolkata Police's disaster management group first as a volunteer in 2019. He later moved to police's welfare cell before shifting to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Due to his identity as someone working at the nearby police station, he got easy access to all departments of the hospital. Many at the hospital thought he was a real cop.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Roy is said to have told the officers questioning him that he had gone to red-light areas twice — in Kalighat and Sovabazar — on Thursday night, hours before he allegedly brutalised the young doctor at RG Kar.

“Roy was at Salua, near Kharagpur in West Midnapore, from August 5 and returned to Calcutta on Thursday. He said he and another civic volunteer from the fourth battalion had gone to a red-light area in Kalighat on Thursday before they turned up at the hospital to check on the patient, who is an acquaintance of the other civic volunteer. After that, he said he went to another red-light area, in Sovabazar, before visiting RG Kar for a second time that night. We are verifying these details,” an investigator was quoted in the Telegraph report.

On Friday morning, after committing the crime, he returned to the barracks in Salt Lake and dozed off.

"When he was being arrested, he showed no sign of remorse. When he finally confessed, he simply said: ‘Aamay phashi diye deen (get me hanged)’,” the investigator was further quoted.

Roy was arrested after a CCTV camera on the hospital premises captured him entering the emergency building around 4 am on Friday. The polcie arrested Roy on Saturday under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS and produced him before Sealdah court, which remanded him to police custody till August 23.

The doctor's horrifying rape and murder on duty have sparked nationwide protests.
