Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Wednesday announced the temporary suspension of party chief Vijay’s upcoming public events, following the Karur stampede that left 41 people dead and over 60 injured.
The actor-politician has been holding weekly “meet the people” programmes every Saturday, having already visited Tiruchirappalli, Namakkal, and Karur. However, the September 27 rally in Karur turned tragic when a massive crowd surge triggered a stampede.
In a statement on social media, TVK expressed sorrow over the loss of lives. “We are in anguish and regret over the loss of 41 of our brethren in the Karur incident,” the party said. “In this situation, our leader’s next two weeks’ ‘meet the people’ programmes are being temporarily postponed. The revised schedule will be announced later.”
The Karur tragedy has sparked widespread debate over crowd management and political accountability, with opposition parties blaming poor planning and inadequate security for the disaster.
