Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated a new housing complex for Parliamentarians located on the Baba Kharak Singh Marg in central Delhi. The project replaces the existing lush bungalows in Lutyens’ Delhi with contemporary, multi-storey apartments.

The newly constructed complex has four residential towers -- with 23 floors each totalling 184 flats.

According to an NDTV report, each flat covers about 461.5 square metres (approximately 5,000 sq ft). Every flat includes five bedrooms with attached dressing rooms and bathrooms, a drawing and dining room, a family lounge, separate Pooja rooms and dedicated offices for the MP and their personal assistant.

Moreover, balconies are provided in all rooms and offices.

Two staff quarters with kitchenettes and attached bathrooms are included.

The NDTV report further reveals that there are separate entrances for staff, MPs, and their assistants. The flats have modular kitchens fitted with cooking hobs and chimneys.

Other amenities in each unit include double-glazed UPVC windows, wooden flooring in the office and master bedroom, vitrified flooring in other rooms, and air conditioning with a VRV system.

A six-storey amenity block -- housing shops, a service centre, dispensary, community hall, canteen, club, gym, yoga rooms, and guest accommodations -- also forms part of the housing complex.

Two basement levels, stilt, and surface parking can together accommodate about 612 vehicles.

Keeping safety in mind, the complex is secured with CCTV cameras and boom barriers and for convenience, there will be ATM and public toilets.

In an effort to achieve sustainability, energy-saving features, renewable energy systems, and proper waste management have been incorporated.

Inaugurating the complex, PM Modi said there had long been a shortage of residences for MPs and first-time members had to struggle to get a house. However, no new residence was built for Lok Sabha MPs between 2004 and 2014, when the Congress-led UPA was in power, and his government has constructed around 350 of them, he noted.

"The India of the 21st century is as sensitive as it is eager for development," he said, adding that his government built a new government secretariat, Parliament building and houses for MPs and also constructed over four crore homes for the poor, hundreds of medical colleges and provided piped water supply for households.

Completed at a sanctioned cost of Rs 646.53 crore, the apartment complex project was approved by the Lok Sabha Secretariat in January 2022. The project met its scheduled completion date of May 2025.
