If you suffer from sinus congestion in the winter, you know how miserable it can be. Pain around your eyes, throbbing headache, stuffy nose — do you recognise these signs? Sinus symptoms can strike at any time, but it's more common when the weather is cold. You need to find a way to ease your discomfort, whether it's caused by allergies or temperature changes.

The symptoms:

Sinus congestion happens when the sinus passages behind your forehead, cheeks, and eyes are blocked or swollen. This swelling usually comes from allergies, a cold, or other things that irritate them. When they're inflamed, they make excessive mucus, causing a stuffed-up or pressured feeling in your face, nose, or head. Signs of this congestion include a stuffed or runny nose, trouble breathing through your nose, a weaker sense of smell or taste, headaches, face pain or pressure, and mucus dripping down your throat. In most cases you can use over-the-counter medicines, nasal sprays, or try steam or saline rinses. For worse cases, doctors might prescribe stronger meds. Avoiding things that trigger allergies and irritants can also  make sinus congestion better.

The culprits:

Sinus congestions can be caused by various culprits. Allergies to pollen, dust, pet dander, or specific foods trigger sinus inflammation. Viral infections like colds or the flu can swell the sinuses, while irritants like cigarette smoke or strong odours worsen sinus lining inflammation. Structural issues like deviated septums or nasal polyps block normal sinus drainage, leading to congestion. Additionally, air pressure changes during flights or scuba diving may also play havoc. So can chronic sinusitis, immune disorders, or dental infections underlie persistent sinus congestion.

Home remedies:

Sinus congestion affects anyone, particularly those with allergies or breathing problems. It happens when the spaces behind your cheeks, forehead, and eyes get swollen, often due to allergies, infections, or irritants.

But there's hope—try these six home remedies for relief.

Inhale steam: Inhaling steam from hot water with added essential oils or herbs like eucalyptus or peppermint can help in removing congestion. The steam helps moisten and clear nasal passages, reducing inflammation and easing discomfort.

Rinse and repeat: Using a saline solution or a neti pot helps rinse the sinuses, flushing out mucus and irritants. This age-old technique effectively clears nasal passages, providing relief from congestion.

Heat it up: Applying a warm compress or cloth over the sinus area can lessen the  pain and pressure. The warmth helps in loosening congestion, promoting better drainage and comfort.

Fluid fix: Drinking plenty of fluids, especially warm ones like herbal teas or broths, aids in thinning mucus and keeping the nasal passages hydrated, reducing congestion.

Spicy treat: Spicy foods containing ingredients like chili peppers or horseradish can act as natural decongestants, clearing nasal passages and reducing inflammation.

Elevate and rest: Adequate rest and keeping the head elevated while sleeping can promote better sinus drainage, providing relief from congestion.
