Markets extended their winning streak on Friday, gaining nearly half a percent, in line with favorable global and domestic cues. After a positive start, the benchmark advanced during the first half and later consolidated in a narrow range until the close. Sector participation was broad-based, with metals, financials, and autos leading the gains, while FMCG lagged behind. The broader markets also reflected strength, as both midcap and smallcap indices registered gains in the range of 0.30% to 0.67%.
The up move was supported by a mix of triggers. Corporate developments, such as Infosys’ Rs 18,000 crore mega buyback, boosted sentiment in IT blue chips. Strong inflows from domestic institutional investors offset continued selling by foreign portfolio investors, while positive cues from global markets further strengthened momentum.
Nifty is now approaching its previous swing high of 25,150, which may lead to some consolidation before the index advances towards the 25,250–25,500 zone. A decisive breakout above 54,900 in the banking index could act as a major catalyst for fresh momentum; otherwise, the move may remain gradual. Meanwhile, traders should continue to focus on the sustained strength in metals, autos, and pharma, while remaining selective in other sectors and themes.
Sensex Today | August CPI inflation at 2.07% versus 1.55%, MoM
August food inflation at -0.69% versus -1.76%, MoM
Urban inflation at 2.47% versus 2.05%, MoM
Rural inflation at 1.69% versus1.18%, MoM
Siddhartha Khemka - Head of Research, Wealth Management, Motilal Oswal Financial Services
Nifty extended its winning streak for the eighth straight session, gaining 102 points to close at 25,108 (+0.4%), in line with a global rally as hopes of a US Fed rate cut next week buoyed investor sentiment. The broader market maintained momentum with Nifty Midcap100 and Smallcap100 up 0.3% and 0.6%, respectively. Sectorally, financial services and metals advanced 1% each, while the IT index posted modest gains led by Infosys, which rose after approving its largest-ever buyback worth ₹18,000 crore.
Defence stocks surged, lifting the Nifty India Defence index over 4% on fresh order wins that spurred strong buying interest. Globally, a 25bps Fed rate cut is widely expected following weak US jobs data. Further, interest rate decisions from the Bank of England and Bank of Japan will also be closely tracked for their implications on global liquidity and risk sentiment.
Overall, the near-term market outlook remains constructive, albeit with potential volatility around central bank events, while progress in India–US trade negotiations could provide an additional boost to investor confidence.

Progress in U.S.-India trade talks is also expected to keep the positive momentum intact in the near term. The defence sector outperformed, aided by the Indian procurement authorities beginning negotiations for six next-generation conventional submarines.
