Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India — the country’s second biggest two-wheeler maker — today added 6 lakh production capacity to its tally making India the largest production hub for the company in the world.
The fourth line at the Narasapura plant (close to Bengaluru) was inaugurated today saw an investment of around Rs 600 crore. With this expansion, Honda India’s annual production capacity from all its four plants stands at 6.4 million units.
The Karnataka plant at 2.4 million units capacity is the biggest Honda plant globally. The company and its suppliers have so far invested over Rs 5,400 crore in this plant. Honda’s other plants are located in Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.
The Karnataka plant is a hybrid plant, which makes scooters a well as motorcycle. The new fourth line is programmed to make more of scooters than motorcycles.
Presently, more than 50 percent of volumes come from scooters for Honda India.
“Honda’s two-wheeler business pans more than 120 countries and India is leading the demand. In 2016-17, India contributed 28% to Honda’s global two-wheeler sales and became the no.1 contributor to Honda’s two-wheeler business," said Shinji Aoyama, chief officer – Asia and Oceania Regional Operations, Honda Motor Co.
Hero Motocorp is the largest two-wheeler maker in India followed by Honda, TVS Motors and Bajaj Auto, in that order. Honda has a market share of 59 percent in the scooter segment while its two-wheeler share stands at 28 percent in the domestic market.
