Amazon has removed sweets sold under the name 'Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad' following a notice from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA).
Highlighted products include 'Raghupati Ghee Ladoo,' 'Khoya Khobi Ladoo,' 'Ghee Bundi Ladoo,' and 'Desi Cow Milk Peda.'
“We have received a communication from the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) regarding misleading product claims by certain seller(s) and investigating them for violations. In the interim, we are taking appropriate action against such listings as per our policies.” said an Amazon spokesperson.
The company also noted that Amazon.in is a third-party marketplace where sellers, not Amazon, list and sell products to customers per applicable Indian laws and Amazon’s policies.

The CCPA (Central Consumer Protection Authority) has issued a notice to Amazon, requesting a response within seven days regarding the sale of sweets on www.amazon.in under the name "Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad." Failing to respond within the specified period may lead to the initiation of required actions under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
The CCPA highlighted that, according to the Consumer Protection (e-commerce) Rules, 2020, facilitating the online sale of food items with misleading representations deceives consumers about the true attributes of the product.
The action follows a complaint by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) alleging deceptive trade practices by Amazon, selling sweets under the guise of 'Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad.' The CCPA, led by Chief Commissioner Rohit Kumar Singh, has expressed concerns over the sale of food products online that falsely represent themselves, misleading consumers about their genuine attributes.
This practice may influence consumers to make purchasing decisions based on inaccurate information, violating the Consumer Protection (e-commerce) Rules, 2020, which prohibit unfair trade practices by e-commerce entities, he added.
