Fine lines are often the first sign that your skin is starting to age, especially around the eyes and mouth. As you get older, the skin’s natural collagen production slows down, leading to less firmness and elasticity. This can cause the skin to sag and create wrinkles. Alongside, sun exposure and environmental factors also play a big role in the appearance of dark spots or uneven skin tone.
With time, your skin may feel drier and rougher, and under-eye bags or dark circles become more noticeable as the skin thins, says Dr Priti Thakor, Head of Medical Safety Sciences Restorative (India) and Digestive Health, APAC at Kenvue, which includes the renowned Neutrogena brand. She adds, “Though these signs are a natural part of aging, taking care of your skin can help manage and slow them down. Understanding these signs and addressing them proactively can significantly impact your skin’s health and appearance.”
Thakor suggests one should look out for these signs as you near your thirties.
Fine lines and wrinkles: Fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth are often the earliest signs of ageing. These typically start to appear due to sun exposure and genetic factors, often earlier in Indian skin. Dr Thakor advises using anti-aging products with retinol and hyaluronic acid, like Neutrogena's Visible Repair range, which helps visibly reduce these signs and repair skin damage in as little as a week.

Uneven skin tone: Uneven skin tone, marked by dark spots or hyperpigmentation, can become noticeable due to sun damage, hormonal changes, and skin inflammation. Treatments with ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide can help even out skin tone and address pigmentation issues
Sagging skin: As you age, the skin’s elasticity diminishes, leading to sagging or drooping. This loss of firmness is a result of decreased collagen and elastin production. Incorporating collagen-boosting treatments and products can help restore skin’s resilience and firmness.
Dullness and rough texture: Dull and rough skin texture can be attributed to factors such as dehydration, inadequate exfoliation, and environmental stress. Regular exfoliation and hydration are essential to maintaining a smooth and radiant complexion. Consider using products that promote cellular turnover and skin renewal.
Under-eye bags, dark circles: The appearance of under-eye bags and dark circles becomes more pronounced with age due to factors like fluid retention, thinning skin, and lack of sleep. Eye creams containing retinol and hyaluronic acid can help address these issues, reducing the appearance of tired eyes and dark spots.

Pore enlargement: Enlarged pores are often a result of excess oil production and sun damage. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine that includes pore-minimising treatments can help keep pores clear and reduce their visibility over time.
Dryness and Dehydration: Increased dryness and dehydration can lead to flaky and dull skin. Factors such as environmental exposure and hormonal changes can exacerbate this condition. Ensuring adequate hydration and using moisturisers that lock in moisture can reduce dryness and maintain skin health.
