Creating greener spaces within homes can be an aesthetic choice, however, experts reveal that it is also a necessity for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. As cities grow more congested and pollution levels rise, introducing nature into modern living spaces can significantly improve the quality of life. Whether through small changes like adding indoor plants or larger efforts like integrating eco-friendly designs, enhancing greenery in urban homes has become the need of the hour.

Urban living is often associated with confined spaces and limited access to nature. However, experts stress on the need to embrace greenery to foster healthier, more sustainable lifestyles. Explains Vishal Sharma, Founder Partner & Principal Architect of Confluence, “Including nature and eco-friendly design in your living environment helps create a more sustainable, healthier lifestyle. Greener spaces not only provide cleaner air but also create a calming environment, enhancing the quality of life."

Here are some innovative ways to make your urban spaces greener and healthier:

  • Vertical gardens: In urban homes with limited space, vertical gardens offer an excellent solution. These gardens maximise greenery in small areas, transforming plain walls into vibrant, living spaces. Sharma suggests, "Installing a living wall with climbing plants like ivy or jasmine not only refreshes the air but also adds an aesthetic element to your home." Additionally, creating a herb wall in the kitchen using recycled containers provides fresh ingredients for daily meals while adding a touch of green.

  • Balcony as a mini ecosystem: Balconies can serve as mini green ecosystems. By installing a small greenhouse or vertical hydroponic system, you can grow plants year-round without the need for soil, suggests Sharma. “This sustainable approach, which uses a water-based nutrient solution, also creates a habitat for pollinators, making your space more vibrant and eco-friendly.”

  • Smart water management: Eco-conscious living involves smart water management. Installing greywater systems to reuse water from sinks for garden irrigation can significantly reduce water consumption. Additionally, setting up a rainwater collection system with stylish barrels or underground cisterns provides an eco-friendly way to hydrate your plants. “Smart irrigation systems with moisture sensors optimise water usage, ensuring your plants get just the right amount of water,” Sharma explains.

  • Revitalising with biophilia: Kuntal Vyas Aggarwal, Founder and Design Head at Resaiki Interiors and Architecture Design Studio, highlights the importance of incorporating biophilic elements into home design. "Modern living spaces must do more to enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being," she says. Bringing nature inside through indoor plants, natural textures, and maximising natural light fosters a connection with the environment and promotes tranquility. Aggarwal suggests, "Carve out relaxation corners with soft hues and mindful design to establish a sense of peace."

  • Improving air quality: For a healthier home, it’s essential to focus on air quality. Low-VOC materials, toxin-free paints, and sustainable woods not only reduce indoor pollution but also contribute to the occupants' well-being. “Selecting materials with natural textures and colours can positively impact well-being,” says Aggarwal. Additionally, adding air-purifying plants like golden pothos, peace lilies, and snake plants ensures constant fresh air flow.
  • Design for flexibility: In today's dynamic world, designing flexible spaces is key to adapting to varying needs. Aggarwal recommends creating multi-functional spaces with adaptive furniture that reduce clutter and enhance productivity. “Flexibility in design allows occupants to tailor their environment to suit their needs, promoting well-being through functional and adaptable spaces.”
