Often times you may experience an unwelcome blemish on your face. It can be a stubborn pimple, dark spot, or acne mark, these blemishes can quickly affect your skin.  If left untreated or improperly managed, they can leave long-lasting scars or worsen inflammation. This makes proper care essential for maintaining clear, healthy skin.

Blemishes can arise from a combination of factors like hormonal fluctuations, excessive oil production, clogged pores, and external irritants. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, blemishes, including acne, can be a common skin concern, but with the right skincare routine and treatments, it’s possible to reduce their occurrence and maintain healthy, clear skin. Prevention and early intervention are key to managing skin blemishes.

Says Dr Anandita Sarkar, Medical Director at AAYNA Clinics & Clinikally, "Blemishes, especially those resulting from acne, often occur due to a buildup of dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria, clogging pores. Effective treatment requires a holistic approach, addressing both the skin’s surface and internal health."

Dr Sarkar suggests the following skincare steps to avoid blemishes

  • Cleanse gently: A gentle cleanser is essential for removing dirt, oil, and impurities. Choose one with soothing ingredients like salicylic acid if you're acne-prone. Harsh cleansers can damage the skin's natural barrier, leading to dryness or overproduction of oil, worsening blemishes.

  • Never skip a toner: Toners restore the skin's pH balance, preparing it for further treatment. Opt for alcohol-free toners with gentle astringents like witch hazel or tea tree oil to fight acne-causing bacteria.

  • Exfoliate regularly: Exfoliation is key to shedding dead skin cells. However, chemical exfoliation (using AHA or BHA) is recommended over physical exfoliants, which can irritate and leave the skin more prone to blemishes. Keep skin hydrated for optimal results.

  • Keep hydration on point: Hydration is important for all skin types, even oily skin. Use a gel-based or oil-free moisturiser to keep the skin hydrated without clogging pores.

  • Apply a suitable skin serum: Serums with ingredients like niacinamide reduce inflammation and promote a clearer complexion. Vitamin C serums, with their antioxidant properties, help fade dark spots and prevent new blemishes from forming.

  • Sunscreen for sun protection: UV rays damage skin, leading to pigmentation and worsening dark spots. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect your skin from sun damage. Don't forget to reapply it throughout the day, even indoors.

  • Take a nutrient-rich diet: A balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants helps nourish the skin from the inside. Include foods that promote skin health, like leafy greens, nuts, and fruits. Avoid processed foods and excess sugar, which can trigger acne.
