The monsoon brings cool showers and green surroundings, but for many teenagers, it also brings frustrating breakouts. Teenagers are particularly prone due to active oil glands and fluctuating hormones. Studies suggest that with the right habits and skin knowledge, breakouts don’t have to be the season’s side effect.

Monsoon acne happens when sweat, oil, and grime clog pores, creating the perfect breeding ground for acne-causing bacteria.

According to Prasanna Vasanadu, Parent Educator and Founder of Tikitoro, Chennai, teen skin is already adjusting to hormonal changes and when sweat and humidity join the mix, acne flares up fast. “The adolescent skin is highly reactive. They don’t just need products, they need proper guidance. While it’s tempting to scrub the face clean or skip moisturiser altogether, both can backfire. Instead, a gentle, consistent routine can help restore calm and clarity without triggering further flare-ups,” says Vasanadu.

Vasanadu shares 6 smart and gentle habits to beat teen acne during the monsoon:

  • Cleanse twice, not ten times: Use a mild, non-comedogenic cleanser with ingredients like neem, aloe vera, or green tea. “Overwashing strips natural oils and stresses the skin,” advises Prasanna. Gentle cleansing twice daily is enough.

  • Moisturise even if the skin is oily: Skipping moisturiser doesn’t stop oil, it triggers more of it. Choose lightweight gel or water-based moisturisers labelled ‘oil-free’ or ‘non-comedogenic’. Aloe vera and calendula are great for hydration without greasiness.

  • Keep hair fresh and clean: Dirty, sweaty hair transfers oil and bacteria to the forehead and cheeks. Wash hair regularly and tie it back during humid days. Dandruff can also worsen acne, so treat it early.

  • Don't poke, pick or touch: Popping pimples might feel satisfying, but it spreads bacteria and leads to scars. “Teens often pick at acne unconsciously while sweating. A gentle reminder goes a long way,” says Vasanadu.

  • Avoid heavy creams and scrubs: Thick moisturisers, scrubs, and overly fragrant products can clog pores. Stick to minimal, fragrance-free skincare, your skin doesn’t need a dozen layers, just the right ones.

  • Wipe sweat gently, don’t rub it in: Always use a clean towel or tissue to blot sweat. Never rub your face with dirty sleeves or hands, that only pushes bacteria further into the pores.
