Acne is a common problem that occurs when oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria clog hair follicles. It is commonly triggered by hormonal changes, but modern lifestyle factors such as stress, an unhealthy diet, and improper skincare routines can worsen the condition. Environmental pollution and excessive screen exposure may also contribute to skin inflammation, leading to more frequent breakouts.

Acne is a condition influenced by genetics, hormones, and lifestyle factors, says Dr Nirupama Parwanda, Dermatologist & Founder of Zolie Skin Clinic. “Treating acne requires a tailored approach that addresses not only the symptoms but also the root causes, like skincare habits, diet, and stress management,” she adds.

Dr Parwanda shares some effective strategies to tackle acne:

Know your acne: Understanding the type and cause of your acne is the first step toward effective treatment. Hormonal imbalances, poor hygiene, and dietary choices often play a role. A dermatologist can help identify the underlying triggers and recommend targeted solutions.

Update your skincare routine: A consistent skincare routine is vital for managing acne. Use non-comedogenic products and follow a regimen that includes gentle cleansing, exfoliating, moisturising, and applying sunscreen. Avoid over-washing, as it can strip the skin of natural oils and exacerbate breakouts.

Use active ingredients: Add acne-fighting ingredients into your routine. Salicylic acid unclogs pores, benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria, and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) exfoliate the skin. Consistent use of these ingredients can reduce inflammation and improves skin clarity.

Explore advanced treatments: For persistent acne, advanced options like chemical peels, laser therapy, and light treatments offer effective solutions. These techniques target deeper layers of the skin, helping to reduce active acne and prevent scarring.

Follow these tips for clear skin:

Wash your face after workouts: Sweat can clog pores and harbor bacteria, so cleanse your skin immediately after exercising.

Avoid high-glycemic foods: Replace refined carbs and sugary treats with a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in vitamins A, C, and E.

Stick to your skincare routine: Acne treatments require consistency and patience to show results.

Remove makeup before bed; No matter how tired you are, always wash off makeup to prevent clogged pores.

Keep hands off your face: Touching or picking at your skin spreads bacteria and can lead to scarring.
