Harmful chemicals in skincare: 5 beauty products that do more harm than good

Toxic skincare ingredients: While skincare is a vital part of maintaining healthy and radiant skin, it is essential to be mindful of the products you use. Harsh exfoliants, alcohol-based toners, paraben-laden products, fragrance-heavy formulations, petroleum-based moisturisers, and certain physical sunscreens can do more harm than good.

In the quest for flawless skin, many people invest heavily in skincare products, often believing that the more expensive or popular the product, the better the results. However, not all skincare products live up to their promises. Some can even do more harm than good, potentially damaging your skin and leading to long-term issues. Understanding which products to avoid can help protect your skin and maintain its natural balance.

Harsh exfoliants

Exfoliation is an essential step in any skincare routine, helping to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. However, harsh exfoliants, particularly those with large, coarse particles, can cause microtears in the skin. These tiny tears can lead to irritation, inflammation, and even breakouts. Over-exfoliation can also strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and an overproduction of sebum, which can clog pores and exacerbate acne.

What to look for: Opt for gentle exfoliants with fine particles or chemical exfoliants containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs). These are effective at removing dead skin cells without causing damage.

Alcohol-based toners

Toners are designed to remove any remaining traces of dirt and makeup after cleansing, while also tightening pores and refreshing the skin. However, many toners contain alcohol as a primary ingredient, which can be incredibly drying and irritating, especially for those with sensitive or dry skin. Alcohol strips the skin of its natural moisture barrier, leading to dehydration and increased sensitivity. In the long term, this can accelerate the signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles.

What to look for: Choose alcohol-free toners that contain soothing and hydrating ingredients like rose water, aloe vera, or glycerine.

Paraben-laden products

Parabens are preservatives commonly used in cosmetics and skincare products to extend shelf life. However, concerns have been raised about the potential health risks associated with long-term exposure to parabens. Some studies suggest that parabens can mimic oestrogen in the body, potentially leading to hormonal imbalances and an increased risk of breast cancer. While the evidence is still debated, many people prefer to avoid parabens as a precaution.

What to look for: Look for products labelled as paraben-free, which use alternative preservatives that are considered safer and less likely to disrupt hormones.

Fragrance-heavy products

Fragrances are often added to skincare products to enhance the user experience. However, synthetic fragrances can be one of the most common causes of skin irritation and allergic reactions. For individuals with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or rosacea, fragrance-heavy products can lead to redness, itching, and inflammation. Even those with normal skin may experience irritation over time, particularly with prolonged use.

What to look for: Opt for fragrance-free products or those that use natural essential oils in small amounts. Always check the ingredient list for terms like "parfum" or "fragrance," which indicate synthetic scents.

Petroleum-based moisturisers

Petroleum jelly and other petroleum-based ingredients are commonly used in moisturisers and lip balms due to their ability to create a barrier on the skin, trapping moisture. However, this barrier can also trap dirt, bacteria, and sweat, leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Additionally, petroleum products do not provide any nutrients or hydration to the skin, making them less effective than other moisturising options.

What to look for: Choose moisturisers with natural oils, such as jojoba, argan, or almond oil, which provide both hydration and nourishment without clogging pores.
