The rains may feel refreshing, but they also bring a rise in fevers and infections. A fever, headache or body pain often seems like viral illness. But sometimes it turns out to be dengue. Catching the symptoms early and avoiding self medication can help you stay safe and recover faster.
Dr Anirban Chattopadhyay, Critical Care Specialist, CMRI, Kolkata, explains the difference between dengue and viral fever. “Both start with fever and body pain, which is why many people mistake dengue for a simple viral infection. But dengue usually hits harder, lasts longer, and may come with rashes, eye pain, or even bleeding,” he says.
The condition of children and the elderly, warns Dr Chattopadhyay, can worsen quickly if dengue is missed.
Symptoms of dengue and viral fever
Watch the fever pattern
Viral fevers usually fade in three to five days with rest, fluids, and paracetamol. Dengue fevers, however, are more stubborn, high, prolonged, and may suddenly return after a short break.
Monitor body pain
Milder body aches are common with viral fevers, but dengue pain is often severe — sharp headaches, joint pain, and even pain behind the eyes.
Look closely at the skin
If you spot reddish rashes, tiny bleeding spots, or bleeding gums during fever, treat it as a red flag. These signs point strongly towards dengue and need urgent medical attention.

Check hydration levels
Dry lips, less urine, or a child who is not drinking enough are warning signals. Dengue patients can dehydrate quickly, and this can lead to collapse if ignored.
Don’t self-medicate
“Many patients take aspirin or ibuprofen on their own, which can worsen bleeding in dengue. Paracetamol is safer. When in doubt, consult a doctor instead of guessing,” says Dr Chattopadhyay.
When to rush to a hospital
Seek medical help immediately if there is vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, or difficulty breathing. These are danger signs and must not be ignored during dengue season.

Home remedies for dengue and viral fever
Rest well, drink plenty of fluids, and track symptoms daily. Don’t wait too long if things worsen. A simple blood test at the right time can guide the treatment and prevent complications.
Prevent mosquito breeding spots
Empty water coolers, cover buckets, and don’t let water stagnate in pots or corners. Dengue spreads through the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which breeds in homes — prevention is still the best protection.
Boost your immunity: Wash hands often, eat balanced meals, get enough sleep, and wear a mask in crowded areas. These simple steps lower your risk of both dengue and seasonal viral fevers.
