In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, our metabolisms slow down. Dull digestion, creeping weight gain, and lingering fatigue are the tell-tale signs of a stalling inner fire. As per Ayurveda, this fire is called agni: the transformative power that turns food into energy, keeps our minds sharp and bodies light.

According to Dr Prachi Sharma Vats, BAMS and Ayurveda expert at Sheopal’s, “When agni is balanced, you feel light, active, and mentally alert. But when it weakens due to erratic eating habits, late nights, or stress, toxins (ama) accumulate, leading to fatigue, poor digestion, and low immunity.”

The notion of metabolism often conjures up images of calorie-burning machines, gym workouts and fad diets. Ayurveda, however, views it differently – as an inner flame: subtle, vital and worth nurturing. In an age of long hours sat at desks, processed food at the ready and smartphones lighting up at all hours, this flame can flicker. When it does, the result is not only weight gain, but also poor digestion, low energy and a foggy mind.

Herbs are a great way to boost metabolism. You don’t need to make drastic changes in your life or rely on pills or spend maximum hours in gym. Dr Vats shares gentle, consistent adjustments. “Herbs, when taken correctly under guidance, build long-term vitality, not just quick results,” she says.

Here are 8 Ayurvedic and natural ways to stoke your inner fire, as suggested by Dr Vats

Begin your morning with warm lemon water: Start the day with a glass of warm water and a few drops of lemon to gently awaken your digestive system and flush out toxins. Dr Vats cautions: “Avoid cold water in the morning, as it dampens digestive fire.”

Eat your largest meal at midday; Ayurveda teaches that agni mirrors the sun — strongest around noon. Having your main, balanced meal between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. allows efficient digestion and good nutrient absorption.
Include metabolism-boosting spices in meals: Spices like cumin, black pepper, cinnamon, dry ginger and fennel are nature’s little metabolism stokes. “A pinch of these spices in meals or teas is enough to gradually strengthen digestive power,” says Dr Vats.

Stay active throughout the day: You don’t need intense workouts. Regular movement — walking after meals, stretching at your desk, or practising the morning salutations of Surya Namaskar — keeps your metabolic fire alight. “Consistency and mobility are key,” Dr Vats reminds us.

Never skip breakfast, but keep it light: A wholesome breakfast primes your metabolism. Opt for warm, light meals such as oatmeal with ghee, poha with vegetables, or moong-dal cheela with chutney. These provide sustained energy without overloading digestion.

Stay hydrated with herbal infusions: Dehydration slows metabolism. Instead of cold soft drinks, sip warm water or herbal teas made from tulsi, cinnamon or cumin seeds. These support detoxification and gently enhance metabolic rate.

Get adequate sleep and manage stress: Poor sleep and chronic stress disrupt your hormones and slow metabolism. Ayurveda recommends a set sleep schedule, calming herbs such as ashwagandha, and evening rituals like self-massage (abhyanga) or guided meditation. “Rest is as vital to metabolism as movement,” observes Dr Vats.

Support metabolism with Ayurvedic herbs: Lastly, certain Ayurvedic herbs help regulate deeper metabolic and hormonal functions. Herbs such as triphala, guggul, moringa and ashwagandha are known to support digestion, fat-metabolism and hormone balance. They’re not about instant fixes, but about sustainable vitality.
