There’s a reason why fast foods are enjoyed by people of all age groups. They are easily accessible, highly comforting, and super delicious. A refreshing sip of cola or a tasty hot dog on any given day can be a mood booster. However, a recent study from the University of Michigan shows that such fast foods have more damaging effects than you might think.
The study states how one hot dog could reduce 36 minutes of your lifespan, while a fizzy drink could shorten it by 12 minutes. Even breakfast sandwiches aren’t healthy, potentially cutting 13 minutes of your life, while cheeseburgers and bacon do the damage by 9 and 6 minutes, respectively.
This study is the result of analysing 5,800 foods by researchers with the aim of assessing their nutritional value and link to diseases, which directly impacts life expectancy. The findings conclude how ultra-processed foods may be pleasurable, but they are connected to several health problems.
These ultra-processed foods are high in sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, preservatives, and artificial flavours that cause harm when consumed consistently over time. Some of the risks posed by processed foods were previously stated in the British Medical Journal. They include a 50 percent higher risk of heart disease and death, increased mental health issues (by 48 to 53 percent), and a 12 percent higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
On the other hand, the University of Michigan study also listed foods that may help you live longer. It found that nutrient-rich fish can add 32 minutes to an individual’s lifespan. Moreover, legumes, vegetables, nuts, fresh fruits, and different cheeses are healthy choices that support a longer, healthier life.
Thus, indulgence in junk food should ideally be restricted to weekends or cheat days. Consuming healthy food items may not be as tempting, but they will help you achieve better health in the long run, improving your physical well-being and overall quality of life.
