The recent revelation of former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis has reignited public concern around this common male condition. But experts stress that most cases of prostate cancer are highly manageable when detected early.
“It’s important to raise awareness without triggering fear,” says Dr Raman Narang, Senior Consultant Medical and Hematology-Oncologist, Andromeda Cancer Hospital, Sonipat. While prostate cancer can sound alarming, modern medicine offers reassurance and real hope.
“Prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men, and it effects those over 50. Yet despite its prevalence, it usually grows slowly and may never cause serious harm,” shares Dr Narang. He adds, “Many men with prostate cancer live for decades without needing aggressive treatment”.

The prostate gland, though small, can host these slow-growing tumours for years before symptoms emerge. “Regular screening, especially after age 50—makes a critical difference,” he says.
According to Dr Venkata Boppana B, Consultant Urologist at Narayana Health, Kolkata, early detection has greatly improved survival rates. “Detecting prostate cancer sooner has greatly improved both survival rates and treatment outcomes, he says, and stresses on the role of lifestyle. “Eating healthy, staying active, reducing processed foods and alcohol, and managing stress can support prostate health and lower risk,” Dr Bopanna suggests.
