Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis shouldn’t make men panic, here are 5 reasons for hope

Former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis highlights the importance of awareness, but most prostate cancers are slow-growing and highly treatable. According to the CDC, early detection and modern treatments lead to excellent outcomes. Here are reasons why men don’t need to worry.

The recent revelation of former US President Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis has reignited public concern around this common male condition. But experts stress that most cases of prostate cancer are highly manageable when detected early.

“It’s important to raise awareness without triggering fear,” says Dr Raman Narang, Senior Consultant Medical and Hematology-Oncologist, Andromeda Cancer Hospital, Sonipat. While prostate cancer can sound alarming, modern medicine offers reassurance and real hope.

“Prostate cancer is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer in men, and it effects those over 50. Yet despite its prevalence, it usually grows slowly and may never cause serious harm,” shares Dr Narang. He adds, “Many men with prostate cancer live for decades without needing aggressive treatment”.

The prostate gland, though small, can host these slow-growing tumours for years before symptoms emerge. “Regular screening, especially after age 50—makes a critical difference,” he says.

According to Dr Venkata Boppana B, Consultant Urologist at Narayana Health, Kolkata, early detection has greatly improved survival rates. “Detecting prostate cancer sooner has greatly improved both survival rates and treatment outcomes, he says, and stresses on the role of lifestyle. “Eating healthy, staying active, reducing processed foods and alcohol, and managing stress can support prostate health and lower risk,” Dr Bopanna suggests.

Here are reasons why men shouldn't panic:

  • Most cases are diagnosed early and are very treatable: Thanks to routine PSA blood tests and digital rectal exams (DRE), prostate cancer is often caught before it spreads. “Early detection allows for a wide range of effective treatment options, from active surveillance to surgery or radiation,” notes Dr Narang. The earlier it’s found, the higher the chance of full recovery.

  • It grows slowly in most men: Unlike aggressive forms of cancer, prostate cancer typically progresses at a glacial pace. Some men may never experience symptoms or require intervention. “That’s why watchful waiting or active surveillance is often recommended, especially for older men or those with low-risk tumours,” explains Dr Narang.

  • Advanced treatments are continually improving: New therapies have revolutionised prostate cancer care. Hormone therapy, targeted treatments, and immunotherapy are helping men live longer with fewer side effects. “Even in advanced stages like bone metastases, we now manage the disease effectively while preserving quality of life,” says Dr Narang.

  • Survival rates are among the highest for cancers: The statistics suggest that the five-year survival rate for localised prostate cancer is over 99 percent. Even in advanced stages, men can live for many years with the right treatment. “The key is personalised care tailored to each patient’s condition and lifestyle,” Dr Narang points out.

  • Regular monitoring keeps you in control: For men undergoing active surveillance, regular check-ups ensure the cancer isn’t progressing. This approach avoids unnecessary treatment and its side effects. “We don’t just treat cancer, we manage it over time in a way that respects the patient’s quality of life,” says Dr Narang.
