Staying fit requires everyday effort that begins with a good diet. It’s not just important for staying healthy but also for preventing the risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular ailments, diabetes, and cancer.

Especially when it comes to cancer, diet has been shown to have a significant effect on its development. Many foods contain essential compounds that can effectively counter its growth. Several studies show that increased intake of such foods helps lower the risk of the disease.

Dr Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist, took to his Instagram account to share three cancer-preventing foods that can help many people. Sharing the video on his account, he wrote, “3 foods cancer is afraid of… which of these do you already include in your weekly meals?”

Top 3 cancer preventing foods

  • Carrots: Dr Sethi began the list with the good old carrot, commonly available in most Indian kitchens. “These are loaded with beta carotene, a precursor of Vitamin A that reduces oxidative stress and supports immune defences. Carrots are high in fibre which can help lower colon and stomach cancer risk.”

He added that cooked ones are better than raw as cooking makes beta carotene easier to absorb.
  • Garlic: Several studies have found a link between garlic consumption and a lower risk of certain types of cancer. Adding a clove of garlic to your diet, therefore, has health benefits. Dr. Sethi shared, “When crushed or chopped, garlic forms allicin which helps protect DNA and slow down abnormal cell growth.”

He advised to avoid cooking at very high heat as it destroys allicin and let it sit 10 minutes after crushing for best benefits.
  • Broccoli: Broccoli is rich in sulforaphane, a natural compound that’s found in cruciferous vegetables and shown to block cancer cell growth. Dr. Sethi recommended broccoli sprouts which are even stronger.

“They can have up to 100 times more sulforaphane than mature broccoli. Steam briefly to preserve it,” he said.
