The change in seasons often brings a surge of illnesses, making it vital to adapt lifestyles and diets to boost immunity and ward off health issues. During the monsoon, ailments like digestive issues, respiratory congestion, and weakened immunity are common. According to Ayurvedic principles, the body possesses a natural ability to heal itself, particularly with the aid of natural remedies. Consuming warming spices, herbal teas, and nourishing foods can enhance digestion and immunity. Additionally, practices such as daily oil massage (Abhyanga) and herbal steam inhalation are beneficial for detoxification and respiratory strength.

With the onset of the monsoon season, there is an increase in flu and infections, says Ayurveda expert Dr Madhumitha Krishnan. She adds, “As per Ayurvedic principles, the change in weather during monsoon can disrupt the balance of your body's doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), making you susceptible to various illnesses such as colds, coughs, digestive issues, and respiratory problems. To maintain health and prevent illness, it is vital to adopt lifestyle and dietary practices that support the body's natural balance during this season.”

Dr Krishnan suggests the following remedies and herbs to help you stay healthy and strong during the rainy season:

Warm water: Drinking warm water throughout the day aids digestion and detoxification. It is vital during the monsoon as per Ayurveda. It helps balance the digestive fire (agni) and prevents toxin buildup in the body.

Light, warm meals: Opt for easily digestible, warm meals to support digestion and prevent gastrointestinal issues. This helps maintain a balanced digestive fire and prevents ama (toxins) formation.

Triphala churna: This traditional Ayurvedic formulation supports regular bowel movements and detoxifies the body. It consists of three fruits; amalaki, bibhitaki, and haritaki, which are nown for their cleansing and rejuvenating properties.

Eat natural foods: Include seasonal vegetables, fruits, and almonds in your diet. According to Ayurveda, seasonal foods are well-suited to support the body's natural rhythms and digestive capacity during the monsoon. Almonds are particularly beneficial for immunity and strength.

Steam inhalation: Inhaling steam infused with essential oils or plain water helps clear nasal passages and reduce respiratory congestion. It is recommended  for relieving kapha-related imbalances during the monsoon.

Gargling with warm salt water: This Ayurvedic practice helps soothe a sore throat, clear mucus, and prevent infections by maintaining throat hygiene and balancing the throat's microbial environment.

Proper sleep and rest: Sufficient rest and sleep are essential for maintaining your immunity. It also aids in  recovering from seasonal illnesses. Proper rest supports the body's natural healing processes and strengthens the immune system.
