A child's cough can be distressing, especially when they're too young for over-the-counter medicines. It's natural for parents to feel concerned, but there are many gentle and effective natural remedies available. These remedies can help your child feel better and recover faster. From staying hydrated with warm fluids like tea or broth, to using a humidifier to add moisture to the air, there are simple steps you can take.

Always remember to consult a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen, but these gentle remedies can offer relief without the need for medications.

Here's a look at some natural remedies that can help your child feel better and recover soon.

Hydration is key: Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids as this aids their body in fighting off the illness and eases throat discomfort, says Bangaluru-based paediatrician Rashmi Duggal who also practises in Fortis Hospital. Warm beverages like tea or broth are particularly soothing and can help loosen mucus.

Embrace the humidifier: Dry air can exacerbate a cough. Introduce a cool-mist humidifier into their room to add moisture to the air. This can significantly improve their throat comfort, says Duggal.

Harness the power of steam: Allow your child to breathe in steam from a warm bath or shower. This simple practice helps to loosen mucus, making it easier for them to breathe, says Duggal.

Give them soothing cold treats: Popsicles or ice cream can work wonders for a sore throat. If they're not eating or drinking much, Pedialyte popsicles can keep them hydrated while providing relief.

Saline and suction: For congestion, use a saline spray or mist to loosen mucus. Babies can benefit from a suction bulb to clear their nose and make breathing easier.

Honey for healing: Honey is a fantastic cough remedy for children over one year old. Opt for dark honey like buckwheat and mix it with warm water, tea, or milk for a soothing drink.

Salt water gargle: Older kids can gargle with salt water to relieve a sore throat. Mix half a teaspoon of salt in warm water and have them gargle with this solution.

Keep their head elevated: Place extra pillows under your child's head while they sleep. This elevation can help with coughs caused by postnasal drip.

Prioritise rest: Ensure your child gets plenty of rest. Coughs can be worse at night, so these remedies can aid in better sleep.

Steam inhalation: Let your child inhale steam from a bowl of hot water for 10-15 minutes. This can help clear their nose and throat.

Carom seeds and tulsi leaves: Boil water with carom seeds and tulsi leaves to create a concoction that helps with cough and chest congestion.

Mustard oil massage: For babies under two, gently massage their chest, back, and neck with mustard oil infused with garlic.

Turmeric milk: Mix turmeric powder with warm milk and give it to them before bed to boost their immune system and aid in recovery.

Chicken noodle soup: This classic comfort food not only soothes a sore throat but also has properties that can help with cold symptoms.

Hot or cold drinks: Warm or cold liquids can help thin mucus. Hot drinks are ideal for colds, while cold beverages can numb a sore throat.

Mesh bag for babies: If your baby is over six months and eating solids, they can suck on frozen foods in a mesh bag to ease their throat discomfort.
