Rajinikanth was a young man working as a bus conductor with a dream he didn't yet dare pursue before he rose to fame in Indian cinema. Although his on-screen persona and ascent to fame are widely known, few are aware of Nirmala, his first love, who unintentionally started it all.
In a touching admission made by veteran Malayalam actor Devan, Rajinikanth once talked candidly about this period of his life in a private hotel room following the conclusion of filming for the classic movie Baashha.
A Fortuitous Meeting That Changed His Life
Rajinikanth recalled how, while working as a bus conductor in Chennai, he first got to know Nirmala, an MBBS student. Their first encounter wasn't very romantic—they got into a heated argument because she was attempting to board the bus through the front door.
But they continued to cross paths on the same bus route, and their initial hostility quickly evolved into friendship. Nirmala was invited to see one of Rajinikanth's plays, which he was experimenting with at the time. She came to see him perform and was struck by how talented he was.
The Unexpected Event That Revolutionized Everything
One of the most prominent acting schools in the nation, Adayar Film Institute, sent Rajinikanth an admission letter a few days later. He was perplexed to learn that Nirmala had applied, not him.
"You act very well," she said to him. You are truly unique, in my opinion. I'd like to see you on the movie posters. Your enormous cutouts in front of theaters are something I would like to see. You ought to become a well-known actor in India. All of this was in my mind when I watched you perform. I applied on your behalf for that reason.
At first, Rajinikanth turned down the chance because he was uncertain and hesitant. He was concerned about the financial burden and was afraid to leave his secure job. At their subsequent meeting, however, Nirmala, who remained steadfast in her faith in him, gave him cash and encouraged him to come. At last, he consented.
The Superstar Is Still Haunted by a Mystery
Oddly, Rajinikanth stopped communicating with Nirmala after joining the institute. She was gone when he returned to Bangalore after a short stay. His search for her was fruitless because her house was locked.
Devan claims that Rajinikanth shed tears as he told this tale. He claimed that whenever he sees a crowd, he still looks for "Nimmy," as he lovingly called her. "Devan, why hasn't she come get me? He allegedly questioned, "Why doesn't she want to see me, even after I've accomplished all this?"

Life After Nirmala
Despite their separation due to fate, Rajinikanth's amazing journey was made possible by Nirmala's unspoken encouragement and faith in him. He eventually wed Latha Rangachari in 1981, and he is now the proud father of Soundarya and Aishwaryaa.
However, he can still clearly recall that first love and the woman who saw a star in a bus conductor—evidence that sometimes one act of faith can permanently alter a person's life.
