When Karisma Kapoor alleged abuse in divorce plea: 'Sunjay Kapur forced me to sleep with his friends'

Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor, known for her professional success, has also faced significant challenges in her personal life.

She married businessman Sunjay Kapur in 2003, but their relationship soon deteriorated, leading to an acrimonious split in 2014. The divorce proceedings became a high-profile case, with both parties making serious allegations against each other.

Karisma accused Sunjay of domestic abuse in her divorce plea, stating that during their honeymoon, Sunjay forced her to sleep with his friends.

She further alleged that Sunjay once instructed his mother to slap her, particularly when Karisma couldn’t fit into a dress her mother-in-law wanted her to wear during her pregnancy.

These allegations painted a grim picture of her marriage, which contrasted sharply with the public perception of her life.

Veteran actor Randhir Kapoor, Karisma’s father, expressed his disapproval of the marriage from the beginning. In an interview with Hindustan Times, he remarked, “Everyone knows our ­credentials. We are Kapoors. We don’t need to run after anyone’s money. We have been blessed with not only money, but our talent can support us for the rest of our lives. Sunjay is a third-class man.”

Though Karisma and Sunjay initially filed for divorce by mutual consent, the situation escalated when Karisma claimed that Sunjay was unwilling to provide adequate financial support.

This led to further complications, including a case of domestic violence filed by Karisma against Sunjay and his mother. The police, upon receiving these complaints, initiated an inquiry, promising to question both Sunjay and his mother regarding the allegations.

After much drama and public scrutiny, Karisma and Sunjay reached an amicable resolution, and their divorce was finalized in 2016. As part of the settlement, Karisma received substantial alimony.

Reports indicated that she would be given Sunjay’s father’s house in Khar and that he would purchase bonds worth ₹14 crore for their children, which would yield approximately ₹10 lakh monthly in interest.
