Vijay Sethupathi's Maharaja becomes the highest-grossing Indian film in China since 2018!

Vijay Sethupathi's Tamil film Maharaja is gaining significant attention internationally, especially at the Chinese box office. After its successful release in India, the film, featuring Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami, and Mamta Mohandas, has garnered widespread acclaim and is now setting new box office records in China.

Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil film Maharaja has been making waves internationally, particularly at the Chinese box office. The film, which features an ensemble cast including Anurag Kashyap, Abhirami, and Mamta Mohandas, was initially released in India and received critical acclaim. Now, it has caught the fancy of the Chinese audiences, and is making new box office records.

Maharaja debuted in Chinese theaters on November 29, screening across an astonishing 40000 screens. It earned Rs 5.40 crore during its premiere screenings, followed by Rs 4.60 crore on its opening day. The collections saw a significant boost on the second day, adding Rs 9.30 crore to its earnings. With a two-day total of Rs 19.30 crore, the movie established itself as a formidable contender among recent Tamil releases.

The film's performance continued strong on the seventh day, earning Rs 3.90 crore (USD 0.46 million). As of now, Maharaja has accumulated a total collection of Rs 40.75 crore (USD 4.82 million) in China.

Globally, the film has amassed an impressive Rs 146.88 crore in total earnings. Domestically, the net collection stands at Rs 72.41 crore, with a gross collection of Rs 81.83 crore.

With this Maharaja has become the highest-grossing Indian movie in China since Thugs of Hindostan in November 2018. It has also secured its place as the 13th highest-grossing Indian film in the Chinese market.

Produced on a modest budget of Rs 20 crore, Maharaja had already proven to be one of the biggest Tamil hits of the year, earning Rs 125.38 crore worldwide before its China release.

Maharaja joined a select group of Indian films that have found success in China, including 3 Idiots, Dangal, Secret Superstar, Hindi Medium, and Baahubali 2. The movie’s intriguing plot follows Maharaja, a soft-spoken barber portrayed by Vijay Sethupathi, who visits a police station to file a peculiar complaint about his missing dustbin named Lakshmi. Initially dismissed by the authorities, his persistence leads to the unravelling of a sinister mystery.
