At the 2024 BET Awards, Will Smith introduced his new single “You Can Make It,” featuring Fridayy and the Sunday Service Choir, marking his first performance at the event. Smith's dramatic entrance included standing on a circular stage surrounded by flames, with Chandler Moore and the Sunday Service Choir providing powerful backing vocals.

The performance took an inspiring turn when gospel legend Kirk Franklin unexpectedly appeared to deliver a heartfelt spoken-word sermon. The song concluded on an uplifting note with Smith and a large group of backup singers emphasising resilience and growth: “Nobody gets an easy ride / We all have a cross to bear / But there’s wisdom in the fire / And every moment is an opportunity / Embrace the journey,” Franklin intoned.

Before releasing “You Can Make It,” Smith shared his motivation for the track in an Instagram video, expressing how music has been a source of comfort and growth during his darkest times, “Through some of my darkest moments, music has always been there for me – to lift me and help me grow. It’s my humble wish that it can do the same for you and bring you all the joy and light you deserve.”

Smith had been hinting at new music for some time, mentioning in May to Fandango that he had been working in the studio for several years. He also hinted on Instagram that his forthcoming album might be titled “Dance in Your Darkest Moments.” Singer Teddy Swims added to the excitement by revealing he had collaborated with Smith on a song, praising Smith's kindness.

Prior to his BET Awards performance, Smith recently took the stage at the “Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop,” where he and DJ Jazzy Jeff performed a medley of hits, including “Brand New Funk,” “Summertime,” and Smith’s solo track “Gettin’ Jiggy With It.” The performance was a nostalgic moment, as Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff were the first rap act to win a Grammy in 1989 for “Parents Just Don’t Understand.” His wife Jada Pinkett-Smith and their children Willow and Jaden proudly watched from the audience.

In addition to his musical endeavours, Smith returned to the big screen in the blockbuster “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” released in June. The film was a major success, grossing nearly $332 million globally and ranking as the ninth-highest-grossing film of the year. Smith's multifaceted career continues to thrive, showcasing his talents across music and film.
