Sir Ian McKellen was rushed to the hospital after falling off the stage during his performance in the ‘Player Kings’ at the Noël Coward theatre in London. The actor was in a fight scene and lost his balance which caused the fall.
A spokesperson of the theatre revealed that McKellen was in "good spirits" and is expected to "make a speedy and full recovery.” He is also going to be back on stage on Wednesday for a matinee performance of the play.
After the unfortunate incident, the audience was cleared out of the theatre and informed that the show that evening had been called off.
The play is a production of Henry IV, Parts One and Two. McKellen plays John Falstaff. He was battling with Prince of Wales and Henry Percy when he fell off the front of the stage. The actor winced and the staff ran to help him.
The ‘Mr. Holmes’ actor has reportedly undergone a scan and is expected to make full recovery.
The performance of the play scheduled for next Tuesday has been canceled "so that Ian can rest,” added the theatre spokesperson.
The spokesperson also expressed gratitude toward doctors Rachel and Lee who were "on hand in the audience” and thanked the support staff for rushing to the scene.
Paul Nero, a writer, wrote on X: “Audience shocked by Sir Ian McKellen’s fall off stage tonight at Noel Coward theatre. Staff working hard to help him. Thoughts with him, cast and crew.”
5 years ago, Sir Ian McKellen was forced to cancel ‘King Lear’ showing at London's Duke of York theatre after getting injured because of running to catch his train. Nevertheless, he ensured that the audience was still in for a good time by sitting on stage and answering the audience’s questions.
