'A Quiet Place: Day One' has made a significant impact at the box office, grossing an estimated $53 million in its opening weekend in North American theatres, according to studio estimates released on Sunday.
This impressive performance not only marks a new high for the franchise but also exceeds pre-release expectations. Initial tracking suggested a $40 million debut, but audiences showed greater enthusiasm for the action-horror film, which stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn and is distributed by Paramount. In contrast, Kevin Costner’s 'Horizon: An American Saga—Chapter 1' debuted with $11 million.
Despite its strong showing, 'A Quiet Place: Day One' did not claim the top spot on the box office charts. That honour went to Disney and Pixar’s 'Inside Out 2,' which earned an estimated $57.4 million in its third weekend and has surpassed $1 billion in global earnings.
There remains a slight chance that the rankings could change once final numbers are released on Monday. Regardless, this success is a positive sign for movie theatres, which are experiencing a resurgence this summer, though overall attendance is still down compared to last year (by 19%) and pre-pandemic levels (by 36% from 2019).
Directed by Michael Sarnoski and rated PG-13, 'A Quiet Place: Day One' is quickly approaching a significant milestone. With $45.5 million from international showings in 59 markets, the $67 million production has already accumulated $98.5 million in total revenue.
“There’s a lot of love for the ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise,' said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s head of domestic distribution, 'We listened to the fans who wanted to expand the universe.”
Remarkably, this third instalment achieved a higher opening than both of its predecessors: 'A Quiet Place' opened with $50.2 million in April 2018, and 'A Quiet Place: Part II' debuted with $47.5 million in May 2021. John Krasinski, who wrote and directed the first two films, remained involved as a producer for this prequel.
