Manoj Bajpayee talks about risk in filmmaking

One of the most well-known voices in Indian cinema, Manoj Bajpayee, is never afraid to voice his opinions, and his most recent remarks coincide with significant changes in the film industry.

Bajpayee has spoken out about the increasing financial prudence in the theatrical and over-the-top (OTT) sectors and how it's impacting not only films but also the filmmakers as he prepares for the premiere of his next web series, Inspector Zende.

A compelling story that delves into the deranged mind of serial killer Carl Bhojraj—portrayed by the always tense Jim Sarbh—is promised in the eagerly awaited television series Inspector Zende. Manoj assumes the role of Inspector Zende, a man who seeks justice in a mysterious and shadowy world.

The show is already creating buzz, not just for its story, but also for bringing together two powerhouse performers in a tense, psychological drama.

In a recent conversation on The Right Angle With Sonal Kalra – Season 2, produced by Gautam Thakker Films, Bajpayee was asked whether OTT actors are finally being paid on par with their big-screen counterparts.

With a wry smile, he replied, “I don’t get the money,” drawing laughs before getting serious. “However, today, actors are also not getting paid, as they are being told that it’s risky to put in the money and there is a budget constraint. Even the ones who are releasing films in theatres are not getting paid, everybody wants to make this a risk-free project.”

It’s a sentiment many in the industry can relate to. With changing viewer habits, rising costs, and unpredictable returns, producers are increasingly playing it safe.

However, as Manoj Bajpayee notes, even though audiences still want new, daring storytelling, this "risk-free" strategy frequently has a cost: it stifles creativity and undervalues talent.

Fans are undoubtedly eager to see Bajpayee return to action as Inspector Zende draws nearer to its release date. Even though his performance will undoubtedly garner media attention, his candid remarks regarding the state of the industry could have a more profound effect.
